Today, I felt like I was gonna bust if I didn't get on my bike. It's been raining for 4-5 days and I haven't been able to do much good riding. So I set out for Southport to have lunch with Ms. Ito. After lunch, I headed on over to Oak Island - just intending to cross the bridge again. But I felt fine and rode to Wes and Melissa's house way down the island. Approx. 23 miles from my house. It was not a big deal. There was no wind, it wasn't really hot and I had plenty of energy from eating more food lately. (trying to add 10 lbs. by the end of December). They were home and after about a 15 minute visit, I headed back home. No problems heading back. Smooth as silk. I stopped at the store at the bridge and got a yummy Powerbar - Protein Plus bar. Good Lord it was tasty. Cookies and Cream flavor and covered in a little chocolate. But it was a "health" bar so I don't feel all that bad about eating it. When I got home, I felt like I could have rode 25 more miles. Maybe. I ate a big dinner and will sleep good tonight. There, There... That's a good taint.

I found this great picture of me looking mighty fat. I went from a 205 lb flabby fat-ass to a skinny 147 lbs (in 1 year - no picture) then up to a lean and firm 168 lbs. (1 more year). The diet was hell at first. But I got used to it. Now I don't even think about it. I eat nothing bad. No sugar, cookies, cake, ice cream etc. Nothing fried. No beef or pork fat. I eat lots of fish, fruit and of course - the protein drinks. A big help at first was running EVERYDAY (until I had to substitute cycling this summer). Now I cycle and lift weights 4 days a week. Nothing heavy. I just do it consistently. Now I eat right, sleep plenty and cycle to keep the metabolism up. My goal is to hit a stable 175 lbs. and be very lean. (Maybe 180 lbs. - it depends on my legs)

Well. The storm came and went. It was a small storm but lingered FOREVER. I had little damage - mostly to my pier. The bad power on Sunday killed my computer. I had it for 6 years. A PowerMac G4. She was a trusty old work-horse. I hated to see her go. I had just bragged to myself how reliable that machine had been for so long. So. I jumped in the truck and headed up to the Apple Store in Durham. They talked me into a brand spanking new G5 2.7. It is sweet! Had it up and running that very night. All my stuff transferred over in a few minutes and I couldn't be happier. 4 GB RAM and twin 250 GB drives. Runs a 22" original Cinema Display and a 19" LG display in portrait mode no less. One wide - one tall!

Daddy and I went dove hunting this past weekend. It was fun to get out in a field and shoot some. We hunted in a sunflower field between Wallace, Harrells and Rose Hill. I killed 1 dove and got to shoot at 10 or more. Sounds like about my usual ratio.

For the third time in my life - I saw one of these critters launch itself into the air quite spectacularly. I was walking into my kitchen for something and looked out at the Intracoastal Waterway and right when I looked - one of these dudes was just breaking the surface for a 4-5 feet jump and splashdown. I know I wasn't hallucinating because I saw a boat with kids skiing gawk at the sight of it. Last one I saw was in the river. It jumped about 8 feet up. And it had to weigh 200 pounds. This one was equally as large.

This photo reminded me of Yuki's antics of the other day. I was taking out the boat for a short cruise but didn't want to take any dogs along (for once). Yuki got out on the pier and Ryu and I tried to catch him. Yuki runs down the ramp towards the boat - cannot make it over to it, runs back up - Ryu corners him. Yuki knows all is lost - so he runs down to the end of the floating dock and jumps in the water to "escape" being put back in the yard - where he would have to wait until I returned. I gave in and took him anyway. He's so smart.

I think I ate over 50 watermelons this summer. At one time I had 13 all queued up to eat and some towards the end got a little mealy and spongy. Well now. What do you do with old watermelons? New Softride is here.

Here is my new Softride TT 650c. It is spectacular. It rides like it was designed for me. Shawn at two wheeler dealer took lots of measurements and when we finalized the seat height, handlebars etc., it all came together nicely. I really can go faster on it. I can keep it on 25 easily (as opposed to 21/22) as I go to the boardwalk. The aero position is comfortable enough and sitting up to rest my back is fine as well. It is still a bit more aggressive than the old bike I had. The tires are 19 mm. Very narrow. High pressure racing tires by TUFO. I like them a lot. They are clinchers but tubeless. Something new I guess. I have cadence (pedal revolutions per min.) data now on the cyclometer. And it is wireless. The seat beam really makes it a smooth ride. It is hard to describe. Really smooth but not mushy. The new seat is too orange but it'll do. Even the brake levers are pretty.

This bike is really fast. I bought it cause it was such a unique bike and an extremely great deal. It fits me perfect and weighs next to nothing. I can pick it up with my index finger. It is a Bill Holland titanium frame. Made in San Diego by a small shop that specializes in Ti bikes. Each one handmade to order. I just gave it a test run and I was freaked at how fast it is. I can get up to speed in no time at all. I like the HED carbon wheels. They are killer. It came with Dura Ace components and a good set of carbon aerobars. It has a 650 wheel in the front and 700 in the rear. Now I wait for my Softride.

Ryunosuke of Tokyo, Japan is staying at my house for 1 month. He is here to enjoy the remaining days of summer and learn how to speak English before heading off to college next Fall. His vocabulary is very good and he is polite, neat and courteous. At 17 years old Ryu is also very well behaved. His father is a Buddhist priest in Tokyo at a temple that has been in his family for over a thousand years. He is the only male child. So... come on girls! Take Ryu on one last wild ride before he delves into the rigors of his last year of high school, college and then perhaps the Buddhist priesthood. Ohhhmmmmm.

This is a composite I put together of the replacement for my "trusty" Cannondale. It is a Softride Classic TT 650c. It will look almost identical to this photo. The HED 3 carbon wheels really make it look sweet. I should have it in a little over a week, hopefully. I had the factory change the decal to a black one and I've talked to Shawn at Two Wheeler Dealer about the importance of yellow in the scheme. He found yellow cables, yellow tape and is looking for yellow tires. I bet he thinks I'm crazy. I oughta call it the "piss rocket".
UPDATE: No yellow tires. I cannot find 650s with yellow sidewalls (except 19mm). Oh well. Bike has shipped and will be here next week.

Weetabix

Yet another cereal entry. About 3 months ago, I discovered a delightful British breakfast treat. This "weetabix" cereal biscuits are superb when compared to most of the American breakfast cereals. It has a nice nutty flavor and is not sweetened. Some people may find it unusual because it turns to mush in about 10 seconds. If you are crafty with your milk - you can extend the crunch factor a bit. But I like it with walnuts and bananas. And I don't mind the mushiness at all. It is hard to find. I have found it in 2 grocery stores locally and in one, it was in the health food section.

A friend of mine gave me a pickle jar full of DMSO. I've always been intrigued by liquids, solids or gases with unique properties. Mercury was an early favorite. But I remember reading an article on DMSO (Dimethyl Sulfoxide) in Discover Magazine when I was about 10 years old. I remember the fact that it is a normal byproduct of paper manufacturing and would be a miracle drug of the future. It also can be dangerous because one of the properties of DMSO is the ability to cross over into cells and your blood system very easily. It can be used as a carrier of other compounds and alone can reduce inflammation. It also has an odd side effect of giving the user extreme garlic or rotten oyster breath. One of the primary uses for DMSO is for joint pain. And that's where I come in. I have tendonitis. And so far - DMSO has helped. I wonder how bad my breath smells?

I just bought a real road bike. A Cannondale IronMan 800. It was used 4 times and is last year's model but it smells and looks new. It was just my size. 50 cm tall and 650 wheels. Made for a midget. I love the triathalon handlebar thingies. And the "geometry" is perfect for my short legs. I just did 20 miles (in 2-3 runs) up and down Canal drive. Plus the 8 this morning on a different bike. I think I need to rest. I did almost run into a beer truck and sand is very dangerous. Other than that I get up to 25 mph pretty easy and can keep it up all the way to the boardwalk. The shoes that click in take a bit of getting used to but they make it a lot easier to pull up on the pedals. I feel like Lance Armstrong except without the testicular cancer. UPDATE: 6/21 Tuesday: Got a helmet.

I broke down and have allowed a new food into my bitter little monotonous diet from hell world. Quaker Oatmeal Squares. They have a little tiny amount of sugar but taste soooo good. I mean really good. I kinda got tired of my hot oatmeal during warm weather so I have been eating cold cereal. I know this is a little on the cheat side of sweet but it is just barely sweet.

My cousin Mark was fishing with me, daddy and Sonny (Mark's Daddy) at my uncle's pier at Topsail Beach. I guess this was 22 or so years ago. Anyway, all of a sudden we heard my uncle Sonny say in a quivering voice "Where's Mark?!!" Well, that's all it took. We all freaked out and in an instant - SPLASH! - my daddy was in the water looking for Mark's little bloated body in and under the water. Well I ran to the truck to find Mark-e-poo sitting in the front seat - playing with a toy. What a stinker!

Finally. The NorrisCam is up and running. login ID = 1 & password = 1. Simple as that. It is live and always on. Streaming 640x480 at around 10 fps. It is a wireless Hawking camera I bought for $135. Not too bad. I've been wanting a real network cam for ages and I finally bit the bullet when they got cheap. Previously, I used a regular video camera and uploaded a static jpeg. That was lame. This - on the other hand - is awesome. Doesn't need a computer. It has a built in webserver and antenna so it connects to the LinkSys router and the DSL via Wi-Fi. Sweeeet!

Tomorrow, I am off to Jacksonville for another fun-filled 2 weeks of Sturgeon City. I've been looking forward to it all year. It is a lot of fun but very energy draining. It's like you are going full throttle all the time. Since last year was my first, this year I feel a lot more prepared. I can't wait to see the new Mac they got and meet the institute participants. I'll try to keep a running log.

Day 1 - Just got aquainted with everyone again. Saw some familiar faces and set up some of our equipment. The new Mac is killing me. It is the same machine I want to get for myself. A 2.7 dual. Glen got it with a 1 TB hard drive. It screams.

Day 2 - Today, I met the Marine Science Institute folks at Wrightsville Beach. We toured UNCW's aquaculture facility there. They were raising black sea bass and southern flounder. The baby flounders were cute. Bite sized even... Next we met down at CMSR, UNCW's marine science facility on the intracoastal waterway. Neat place. I almost did some work there in grad. school but they didn't get it done in time. Lastly, we went to the aquarium at Ft. Fisher. The kids behaved very well. I think they got a lot out of it. The rain made it sort of gloomy but we were inside most of the time.

Day 3 - I got to go out and photograph the fin fish survey. We rode in a little pontoon boat and used a small trawl. It rained. Next we covered the Physics folks and their bridge building contest. One team's bridge held 40 lbs! It was quite a sight. I helped Glen do some spring cleaning on the server and then we were done for the day.

Day 4 - The media group were present but that was pretty much it. Teachers were there along with the Young Leaders for training. I believe one set of people did come to launch a cardboard boat. Basically we were just prepping for next week. Dr. Buldoc had some really neat ideas for the 6 minute video. The HD cam is awesome. The footage of an interview at the fossil dig looked spectacular. Were were using Final Cut HD and iMovie HD to organize the clips.

Day 5 - Today I got the web site for the 2005 Institute up and going. It doesn't have any images for the stories but I will get them tomorrow. Tomorrow is "Beach Day" where we go to Onslow Beach and play in the water. My favorite day. I was a little late this morning. I had to put Yuki back in the yard. He got out and I didn't know it. He never goes far. I also tested the NorrisCam and it worked great from New Bridge Middle school. And today was the Intel announcement. I was on the web when I could to read the news. This is gonna make my next purchase of a Mac a very difficult decision. I guess I just need to get something now because the new stuff is so far off. I can get something else then. But I don't ever want to hear - Do Do De Do on an Apple commercial.

Day 6 - Well, I got a little too much sun. We all went to Onslow Beach on the base. It was a great day. I did a little presentation using some dried and dead specimens. I was able to keep their attention pretty well. We went to the beach and got to cool off some. The surf was fairly calm. We walked out to a little sand bar and "waded". We also saw some paratroopers jump out of a helicopter. Overall it was a fun day and all the institute participants behaved very well.

Day 7-9 I'm always a little sad when it is over. I feel like I had as much of a good experience as the kids. Graduation always makes me proud to have been a part of Sturgeon City. I figured out how to get the web stories up a lot faster. I have Michelle save the newsletter as a PDF, then I take it an use Photoshop to clip out the images, save them as JPEGs and open the file in Preview to get thet ext. Works like a charm. No more scrambling for files. I invited some people to my Pig Pickin'. I hope they come. I enjoyed helping the Marine Science and the Media people. Glen is such a nice person.

Dude... Where's my blender?

Whew... I'll never do that again. (Typing this is kinda hard. My fingers are still drunk) I knew it finally had to happen. I woke up feeling bad. Not terrible - just bad. I believe on the newly developed (by me) scale of hangovers, this one is a strong Category 1. Almost a 2 but not quite. A five, on the other hand is when you wake up with your clothes (if you have any on) damp all over, at least 1 tooth is loose, the previous night is a blur and the room spins when you try to stand up. It also feels like a iguana has laid a turd in your mouth. I haven't been there yet, but I believe the opportunity will present itself eventually. Thankfully Wes, Kat and Melissa kept insisting I drink some water, which I hate. I did that and I feel it probably diminished the severity of my current state. The old frozen blueberries and papaya I threw into the blender when making the margaritta didn't help at all! In addition, NEVER EVER put EverClear in your mouth. Not even 1/2 a teaspoon. It is like hot poison. The roof of my mouth is still numb. I bet it makes a real good flame blowing fuel though. I have learned another valuable lesson - drink lots of water after you drink and don't put old old fruit in your drinks. Perhaps blueberries were not a good idea anyway.

The Rialta Rendevouz

Wes and I drove mama's Rialta from Tampa, Florida to Carolina Beach in 11.5 hours. We averaged around 78 mph on I-95 and got 15.5 mpg. Pretty good with the air conditioner blasting and all. While in Tampa (Seffner) we didn't do much. We ate, slept and walked around the big ole RV park. Lots of geezers. We climbed up into a big giant expensive one and rested a little. Wes honked the big air horn a few times. It sounded like a cruise ship. Our trip back wasn't too bad. We took old Highway 17 when we got past Savannah. I bought some hard peaches and ate 10-11 of them and 6-7 oranges on the trip back. Our arrival in Carolina Beach coincided with a very high lunar tide. Canal drive was flooded more than usual. Yuki and Hana were glad to see me come home.

Snake-e-doodle

I have a 7 ft. long Boa Constrictor. Long story short - This past January I was asked to take it out and let 2 young boys hold it. Well, I told them to give me a sec. with it because it might be a little ornery since I haven't "played" with it in a long time. I took it over to show their snake phobic mama first and as I was preparing to scare her with it - it bit me good on the chest. I felt it hit me, but didn't think it was the snake. It had never bit me before. But sure enough, I had a nice little ring of teeth marks with blood oozing out. It bit me again as I tried to put it back in its cage. It is named Snake-e-doodle. The other day I was cleaning out a big pile of snake poop and it took me 40 minutes to coax it back in its cage. Maybe I should stick to the guppies.

Well, I married another cousin this past weekend. No, I didn't get married to one, I conducted the ceremony for my cousin Barry Brown and his new wife Kim. We went over to Sunset Beach and I tied the knot for them under a gazeebo on the oceanfront. We took some awesome photos as well. Then, we high tailed it over to Umberto's Restaurant for supper. It was bike week - not the gay one - so there were lots of bikes and bikers. Anyway, Barry and Jack ordered pork chops. And oh what chops they were. I felt guilty just looking at them. I had the broiled salmon.

For some reason this is one of my favorite memories of going to school in Guam. I was sort of put in the care of Rosanna Yoon when I got to UOG. She turned out to be one of the nicest people I have ever meet. She took me down to the ID place up on campus to get my ID made. The line wasn't long and when it was my turn, I was the last one there. Well, they have to do the photos in sets, so instead of wasting a shot, she jumped into my lap for a little candid photo op. Rosanna and her family made me feel welcome in Guam. Her mama, sisters, Gina (or Gyna as she became to be known) and Doris and the rest of her family always made me feel at home when I came over to visit. Even her 2 older brothers were nice. Gina helped me with my algebra and I made her rice crispy treats. She was the only other person I knew who liked them as much as me. Rosanna took me out behind her house to see a little pig they were raising. She made me catch it so we could squeeze it. It was hard. 4 years later, when Rosanna got married, they shot the pig (now a huge hog) and shaved the hair off with a Bic razor. They also caught the blood in a bowl to make "fatada" - pigs blood pudding. I really want to go back and visit the Yoon family.

2 years ago when I finally started drinking, I hoped I was going to be able to enjoy the smooth flavor of bourbon. As a child I enjoyed the sweet smell of Jim Beam, Early Times, JW Dant and other brown spirits that my daddy and uncle were always mixing with or chasing with Sun Drop. I was wrong. Those liquors taste terrible. I don't see the attraction. They're disgusting. Oh, they smell great and when everybody is drinking it, it looks soooo good. About 2 weeks ago, I started drinking Muscle Milk again. I figured I could tolerate the extra fats since my metabolism is running higher.

They have a new flavor: Chocolate, Carmel, Pecan. It is good for a change. I still like Cookies & Cream the best. Second best is Vanilla. 18 grams of fat per serving! Supposed to be good fats.

Week 2 - Summer vacation 2005

It is Saturday morning - May 14th. The grass in my yard is calf high. I have to mow it today. I think the temperature will be in the lower 80's. Perfect! Except the water is still too cold. Although I have been in 2-3 times so far. Yuki and Hana got out this morning and my neighbors, Bob and Sylvia brought them back over. I was a bit freaked.

Tomorrow is my cookout. I hope it doesn't rain. I want to play croquet.

Have to go lift.

UPDATE: Never hit dog crap with the weedeater. And if it lands on your upper lip - fight the urge to lick it off.
